The Mentor Role

So, you want to participate as a mentor. We hope you will find this a very satisfying way to contribute to our club and support a new member in becoming comfortable with Toastmasters as well as gaining the personal satisfaction of making a new friend.

Here are the guidelines for mentorship:

  1. A three-month commitment is required. After three months, your mentee can choose to have another member of the club as a mentor or choose no mentor at all. As the mentor, you also have the choice to decide whether or not to continue the mentor/mentee relationship.

  2. Work with the VM of Education to have your protégé accept some of the easier roles at first, such as AH Counter, Grammarian, Word Master or Inspiration of the Day.

  3. When your mentee does have one of these roles, get the objective sheet for that role and help them understand the role THE WEEK BEFORE they are to perform the role.

  4. Sit with your mentee at meetings and help them understand the objectives of the speeches, the various speaking roles, as well as to support them in fulfilling their role if they have one.

  5. Be available after meetings to answer questions or provide feedback (take them to coffee!!)

  6. Coach your mentee on their speeches, (especially the first three). Take time to meet with her/him and provide feedback.

We are very interested in your feedback on the Mentor Program. Please Contact the VP of Membership with your input, questions, or concerns.
